Herbal Alchemy Perfuming Class
julianne class 1

I had planned to drive, but with the snowstorm they said was coming I opted for mass transit. Two trains and two subways later, I was on the doorstep of Herbal Alchemy in Brooklyn, to take the second part of Julianne Zaleta’s Natural Perfuming class. I met Julianne when I was her assistant for part 1 of the class. Since I have problems wearing synthetics, I’ve been purchasing and making naturals perfumes.

Natural Perfume Material

I make and sell soap, and I also make (but don’t sell) my own natural perfumes. I can’t wear synthetic fragrances anymore, and have come to adore naturals. This coming Saturday, I’m spending the afternoon with Julianne Zaleta of Herbal Alchemy to learn more.

I love these two pictures, and I wish you could also smell what’s in the bottles.

Gratitude List 1.12.14

LI Indies 1

One of the things I enjoy doing during the day is finding things to be grateful for. Sometimes they are huge and important (see #’s 1 and 3) and sometimes they are small and silly (see # 4).  Whatever they are, focusing on them brings me to the moment I am living in and puts a smile on my face for all I have. Do It Yourself Bran Muffins

muffin 1 done

One of my customers, Sue, called me the other day. She needed soap and wanted to stop by. I told her I’d be home all day because it was a cooking day. I try once a week to cook as many things as I can and freeze meals for days when I’m busy. When Sue stopped by I had just taken bran muffins out of the oven so I sent her home with soap and muffins. Sue called me later that day for the recipe, I had told her it was on the back of the Kellogg’s All Bran cereal box but it seems I had an older box and the recipe is no longer there. Since Sue and I both enjoyed the muffins, I thought I’d share it with you. I did make a few changes. I used buttermilk instead of regular milk and I cut back a little on the sugar. (more…)

Gratitude List 1.5.14 New Year

Alegna scrabble

I like New Year’s Eve, not because I like to go out. In fact, we spent the night at home watching a movie. I think I made it to midnight, but the fact that I’m not sure means Brian probably had to wake me up to give me a New Year’s kiss. Here is why I’m grateful for the new year. (more…)

Business Advice from Leaders in the Beauty Industry

Empty pot Monet alegnasoap

I started Alegna Soap about 5 years ago. I didn’t know anything about running a business, let alone a soap business. I thought it would be interesting to ask a few successful entrepreneurs in the Bath and Body business what the best business advice they ever got was. After reading the responses, I wish I had their advice when I started. (more…)

Why Soap?

alegna_soaps

When I meet someone for the first time, I am usually asked “How did you get interested in making soap?”  It’s a hard question to answer. I’ve always been interested in “things” science, and making soap is science. I was intrigued by the idea that you can take two totally different things, oil and a base, and make a completely different substance, soap.  But there wasn’t a lot of extra time in my life with a full time job and a family, to explore soap making.
